Show Notes
I had someone ask me recently “how do I know if I’m doing podcasting right?” The good news is that podcasting is really flexible. There are hardly any rules so I don’t think you can do it wrong. The only guideline I recommend is be interesting and have decent sound quality. She insisted there must be more to it than that.
Here’s what really matters. It’s not about right or wrong. It’s about what is going to make podcasting fun and successful. All of the successful podcasters we work with have one thing in common.
They have something to say. Seems like common sense I know. You’d be surprised how many people aren’t sure or doubt themselves. They worry that what they have to say isn’t going to be interesting and that no one will want to listen.
The only way to know is to put it out there.
If you are a subject matter expert and can teach, inform or inspire us there is an audience that will be interested.
The same thing goes if you can make us laugh or remind us that we’re not the only one who have struggles or frustrations in life. Even better, if you can takes us with you into a story for a bit and help us see new possibilities.
Oprah made a media empire around that very thing!
You might be like my friend Shannon the host of Pep talk for Side-Hustlers podcast. She told me she started podcasting daily because she had a lot to say! Some of our clients tell us they feel called to share the information. You might feel that way too.
Don’t be afraid to have a point of view. Take a stand. Make it clear who you are, what you value and what listeners should expect. One of the most popular podcasts in the world is the Joe Rogan Experience. He’s unfiltered with his opinions and his vocabulary, with episodes over 3 hours long. It works for him. He also knows that a huge chunk of the podcast-listening-world isn’t going to get it. He’s all in for the people do get it. That’s what having a point of view will do for you.
Are there going to be a few people who resonate with you? Probably. That’s okay. The enthusiasm and loyalty from those who do get it will more than make up for it.
Podcasting doesn’t require any degrees or certifications or special training. Be willing to share what you know from your unique perspective. That’s it. If you aren’t already podcasting, I hope this inspires you to start. Have a great day and Happy Podcasting!
