Show Notes
What is the future of podcasting and how can you take advantage of changing trends? This episode outlines the moves made by Spotify and AmazonMusic/Audible and how they are re-framing the way we think about audio content. What happens when the distributors become the creators?
How can it help you?
Today’s episode is about podcast trends.
What’s the future of podcasting and how can you take advantage of theway things are changing?
There have been a couple of big moves in the past few weeks.
First was the Joe Rogan Deal that was announced back in May.His full library – dating back 11 years and on-going episodes – will be exclusive to Spotify beginning September1.
“Here’s the WSJ quote “ Joe Rogan is taking his podcast exclusively to Spotifyin a licensing deal worth more than 100 million according to a person familiar with the matter.”
His podcast is considered the most downloaded podcast in history. And now if you want it, you’ll have to use the Spotify app. And $100million? That’s a ton of money. Clearly Spotify anticipates a big payoff over along period of time.
Spotify made more news with the debut of The Michelle Obama Podcast that launched last week. It is also an exclusive to their platform. Her first guest, husband President Obama was a great way to start.
Which brings me to AmazonMusic/Audible. Libsyn let us know that they have a deal to put Libsyn hosted podcasts on AmazonMusic/Audible.
They already have the process set up to submit your show so once AmazonMusic/Audible are officially publishing podcasts your show can be there. No dates yet. We’ll keep you posted as this is updated.
Why does this matter?
Because the industry is growing up and while most of us are never going to be the super stars like Rogan or Obama, it’s important to understand how you can benefit.
Some people have compared the growing up phase of podcasting to blogging. I get it. Both are online driven content but but I think the better comparison is Netflix.
They created streaming. Well, not the technology, that was already happening. They went out and found the content and made it simple, easy and cost effective for consumers to pick and choose what they wanted.
Amazon got in the game with Prime Video. Same set up. buy great content, make it easy to stream with mass scale.
Disney said why am I getting a royalty when I could have the whole pie and launched their exclusive channel for the huge library of content they’ve already paid to produce.
This is where I see podcasts going. A collaboration between creators and distributors.
I think advertisers and sponsors are looking to be part of that collaboration as well.
Podcasting will continue to grow in content created and content consumed. I think they will be options for small independent podcasters to take advantage of the increased access as well.
